With a group of friends, we embarked on a Cycle for a Cleaner Future ride from Whitsett to Ohiopyle and back, a 64 mile adventure along the Great Allegheny Passage. Lots of lovely attractions along the way - countless small waterfalls, fresh green of a spring forest , post-glacial rock formations dotting the forests along the way. We also witnessed to the past extractive economy of mining and logging. In at least two areas iron (and other heavy metal)-rich mine drainage discharged to Youghiogheny River, and plenty of places had remnants of coal around the surface.
The experience taught us to appreciate friendship, to dwell in the moment and in place, and by finding beauty and preciousness, be even more focused on the need to preserve and protect Earth, as we know it.
